DANCE LIME TREE OF SACHSENBRUNN

This vigorous broad leaf lime tree is between 350 to 360 years old and has become the symbol of the village of Sachsenbrunn.
The Tilia platyphyllos is a natural monument, a veritable temple of greenery to the festivities of music and dance that are organised in the open air in Sachsenbrunn (the village is located in the Hildburghausen district, on the southern edge of the forest of Thuringia).

It was planted at the end of the Thirty Years War and is mentioned in the inventory of the village of Sachsenbrunn in 1662. Historic accounts and bills mention work done on the wooden supporting structure and the dance floor in the 18th century.

The impressive growth of the horizontal branches enabled a platform to be built. Ten stone pillars support the weight of the wooden structure as well as that of an octagonal platform 2m50 above the ground that is covered by a dance floor approximately 7 metres wide.
The tree has reached a height of 30 metres, and the diameter of its crown is approximately eleven metres.
